Digital Dentistry – CT Scan
What is a CT Scan?
A CT scan allows us to see more than with a regular dental x-ray. This digital technology gives us an in-depth view of your teeth, jaw, underlying bone, soft tissues and nerve pathways. Oftentimes, a CT scan is necessary before oral surgery or when creating a treatment plan. Our digital dental machinery uses a minimal amount of radiation to capture a detailed image.
Why is a CT Scan needed?
We often recommend a CT scan prior to having surgery. The scan is incredibly beneficial for implant patients who will need a personalized treatment plan specific to their needs. The scan gives us the chance to see underlying bone and soft tissue as well as nerves so that we know where to place the implants. The CT scan uses a minimal amount of radiation so that it is safe and effective for most of our patients.
What makes you a good candidate for a CT Scan?
Becausr CT scans are quick and easy to do in our office, they’re recommended for most patients who need a more detailed image for treatment purposes. You will come in for an exam and consultation to determine if a CT scan is needed. You may need the scan before having surgery done or while treatment is being administered. Many patients have found that CT scans are easier to have done than typical dental x-rays.
What happens during a CT Scan?
You will have a lead apron draped over your shoulders for your protection. Next, you will stand in the middle of the CT scan and be instructed to bite down on a bite bar. The machine will circle your head and take several seconds to complete a full image. The image is immediately transposed onto our computer screen so that we can examine it. Your CT scan results will allow us to create a personalized treatment plan and provide adequate care as needed.
