Under ideal situations, a procedure called “gum contouring” around implant crown should be performed for every implant restoration. This procedure allows future gums around the implant crown to grow to size and shape similar to those gums around the natural teeth, thereby maximizing implant esthetics. This procedure involves making a temporary implant crown, which the patient wears it for a period of 1-3 months.  During these months, the patient needs to come back to the dentist as needed to adjust the “emergence profile” part of the temporary implant crown, gradually shaping the gums to the desired contour. Once the patient and the dentist are satisfied with the gum contour around the temporary implant crown, a final implant crown can be delivered. Note that for an implant crown to look nice, the gums around it must look natural. Otherwise, no matter how perfect the implant crowns may be, if the gums around the implant do not appear natural, the whole implant therapy will not be esthetic.
