Sedation (Sleep) Dentistry
What is Sedation (Sleep) Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry, sometimes referred to as sleep dentistry, is ideal for patients who are either nervous about having certain treatments done or who are undergoing more invasive procedures. Patients who are undergoing oral surgery may need or request sedation to make the procedure more comfortable for them. Sedation is administered safely and conveniently in our office. Our goal is to provide you with a comfortable, relaxed appointment regardless of the treatment being done.
Why is Sedation (Sleep) Dentistry needed?
Most often, sedation dentistry is needed because a more complicated procedure will be done. For oral surgery and periodontal treatment, sedation can make it more comfortable to have the work done that is needed. If you forgo dental treatment regularly because of fears and phobias, sleep dentistry is ideal in keeping you calm during appointments. When you are in a sleep-like state, you won’t remember the appointment or be awake to know what is happening.
What makes you a good candidate for Sedation (Sleep) Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is carefully monitored in our office at all times, which is why it’s safe for the majority of patients who need or want it. We will go over your health and medical history before any sedation is administered. For most patients, sedation is an ideal choice for their dental needs. For others, certain medications should be stopped prior to having sedation administered.
What happens during Sedation (Sleep) Dentistry?
You will first come into our office where we will go over your health and medical history. We will then provide you options for sleep dentistry according to your needs. We offer oral conscious and IV sedation as well as nitrous oxide. Depending on what you both want and need, we will begin to administer the sedative to relax and put you to sleep. It is important that you always have a loved one or friend bring you to and from your appointment when you’re receiving sedation. We will bring you to a recovery room after the procedure where you will be given time to wake up before leaving the office.
