Types of Dental Implant Restorations
Periodontists work with the restorative dentists, such as general dentists or prosthodontists, to offer dental implant therapy to patients. The surgical aspect of implant therapy is provided by periodontists, while the restorative aspect by general dentists or prosthodontists. Team work and excellent communication between both team members are critical to the success of implant therapy.
In general, different types of dental implant restorations can be summarized as follows:
- Single-unit implant crown – replace 1 missing tooth
- Implant bridge – replace several missing teeth in the same area of mouth
- Implant denture – replace multiple missing teeth (implant denture offers far better retention and support than the conventional denture, and can be removed by patients)
- Implant hybrid prosthesis – replace multiple missing teeth (implant hybrid prosthesis offers better chewing ability than implant dentures, and the hybrid prosthesis cannot be removed by patients)
