Mouth Guards – Bite Adjustments and Occlusion Therapy
What are Mouth Guards?
Improper bite, known as malocclusion, can cause a variety of side effects and dental problems that can be detrimental to your oral health. We can improve your bite with the help of a mouth guard. These mouth guards aren’t just suitable for nighttime grinding, but they actually work to correct a range of malocclusion problems. This ensures that your upper and lower teeth come into harmony together, which is referred to as intercuspation.
Why are Mouth Guards needed?
Many people who have a bite that is off may not even realize there is a problem. You might assume that your teeth are normal and that there isn’t an issue that should be fixed. Some of the different problems that can occur as a result of malocclusion include:
- Bruxism (grinding)
- Breaking, cracking and fracturing of teeth
- Flat-looking teeth
- TMJ-related pain and problems
- Broken dental restorations
- Loose teeth
- Tooth pain and sensitivity
What makes you a good candidate for Mouth Guards?
In some cases, surgery as well as orthodontic treatment is necessary for severe malocclusion problems. However, a mouth guard can either be used on its own or in conjunction with these other treatments. The mouth guard is made to fit your mouth perfectly so that it’s comfortable and easy to wear. You should wear your mouth guard every night in order for it to be effective at adjusting your bite.
What happens during Bite Adjustment and Occlusion Therapy?
You will first come into our office and have your bite tested. By using a small piece of transfer paper and biting down on it, we can see where your teeth are coming into contact. We can offer a range of different options to adjust your bite and treat malocclusion problems. When creating a mouth guard, impressions will be taken and sent to a lab where the appliance is made just for you. You will be instructed on when to wear the appliance in order for it to be effective.
If you think you may need a bite adjustment or occlusion therapy, call our office and we will be able to answer any of your questions.
